Lithuania wants to block Yandex.Taxi

Lithuanian Minister for Economy and Innovation Aušrinė Armonaitė and Minister for Communications and Transport Minister Marius Skuodis asked the government to block Yandex.Taxi in Lithuania. The local government believes that the app poses a threat to national security. This was reported on the agencies' website.
"We have asked Apple and Android to remove the Yandex.Taxi app from their platforms. We are liaising directly with representatives of the companies to get this done as soon as possible. For too long we have allowed the tools of Western culture to be used against us," Ms. Armonaitė said in a statement.
The Yandex.Taxi service was launched in Vilnius in summer 2018. Back then, the city's mayor's office asked the state security department to assess whether the app posed a threat to the national interest and security of the country. A similar proposal was also made by members of the Lithuanian parliament. Lithuania's National Cyber Security Centre later advised residents of Vilnius not to use the service, as they assessed it was transmitting data to Russian IP addresses.
